Solo Music Gear Coupon: BODY FINISHING WITH OXFORD
Ok this is exciting! The neck is finished (obviously you will be finishing both at the same time; more or less, but for the blog’s sake, we are doing this sequentially). You’re happy with the result, and now you are anxious to start finishing the body. We are going to take certain things for granted here, the body is raw wood, you have checked for screw spacing, hardware and neck fitting and you have sanded the body down to at least 220 and hopefully 320 grit paper. There are no (or few) sanding lines you can see…there are no major knots or blemishes and so on …. the body is ready to be finished. So, depending on the wood, your first decision is whether to fill the grain. Oxford supplies a grain filler in the finishing kits, and it is also available here at Solo Guitars as a separate item. Depending on the wood and the final look you wish to achieve, grain filler is a great idea. With alder or basswood you can get away without the grain filler, but with ash or mahogany being open grained woods, you should consider it. As a simple example, picture your backyard, and then picture it with a deep gully through the middle. If you take topsoil and evenly cover the yard, the gully will get smaller, but it will take many of those layers to eventually fill the gully. Using grain filler is like filling the gully before you cover the yard with an even coat of topsoil. In finishing you will end up using less lacquer to create your final product if you fill the grain. Ok, so the actual product. I have used many different grain fillers, but the Oxford product is super simple …. open the can and mix the filler until you achieve a smooth syrupy liquid. Solo Music Gear Coupon Brush this onto the body with the brush strokes going sideways across the grain. Make sure you cover all parts of the guitar body as evenly as possible……now wait until it looks like the filler goes dull and has dried. Start removing it with a course fabric (like cheese cloth). Rub across the grain so you don’t pull all the filler out of the grain. When it looks like you have removed it all, let it dry overnight. The next day you may have to do a bit of sanding to remove any excess grain filler. Look at the body on a shallow angle in the light … you will see how well the grain has been filled. If there are areas that aren’t filled, re-apply and go through the process again. When you are happy with the result, we can move on.
